Lakshmi Jhapi – The Sacred Bamboo Basket of Goddess Lakshmi in Bengal

Lakshmi Jhapi – The Sacred Symbol of Prosperity

In Bengal, devotion and craftsmanship meet beautifully in the Lakshmi Jhapi — a sacred handmade bamboo basket that holds deep spiritual meaning. It is not just a puja item but a cultural symbol representing the presence of Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, in every household.

How the Lakshmi Jhapi is Made

The making of a Lakshmi Jhapi is a delicate process rooted in Bengali rural artistry.
Local bamboo artisans hand-weave a basket shaped like a Kalash (sacred pot). A small bamboo lid is crafted to fit perfectly on top. The entire piece is then covered with a red cotton cloth, which is hand-stitched carefully.
Each piece of cloth is beautifully decorated with half cowrie shells (Kaudi) — sacred symbols of wealth and blessings. The lid, too, features the same design. At the bottom, a stitched paper pipe base helps the Jhapi stand upright gracefully.

Spiritual Significance

In many Goddess Lakshmi idols, this Jhapi is seen either in her hand or placed near her feet. It represents the divine container of wealth, filled with prosperity and good fortune.
Bengali households often keep the Lakshmi Jhapi in their home temples, beside the idol or picture of the goddess. Women pray to Devi Lakshmi, asking her to “fill this Jhapi with her blessings.” It is considered an auspicious symbol for wealth, purity, and devotion.

When is Lakshmi Jhapi Used?

The Jhapi is a common sight during major Bengali and Hindu festivals like:

  • Lakshmi Puja
  • Kojagori Lakshmi Puja
  • Diwali
  • Makar Sankranti
  • Bengali New Year (Poila Boishakh)

It is placed near the goddess as a mark of gratitude and prayer for abundance.
